Rethinking Disability & Mathematics: Designing Mathematics Classrooms from the Margins

The Los Angeles County Office of Education presents Rethinking Disability and Mathematics with Dr. Rachel Lambert, Ph.D, in collaboration with the Center for District Capacity Building, the Division of Special Education, and the STEM Mathematics Unit.

How can we transform our classrooms to make math accessible and engaging for a wider group of learners?

Imagine if math classrooms were spaces where students with disabilities could discover their power and potential and be appreciated for their many strengths. Join us as we immerse ourselves in Rethinking Disability and Mathematics: A UDL math classroom guide for grades K-8, by Rachel Lambert. We will examine methods to design math classrooms that empower disabled and neurodiverse students to engage in mathematics in ways that lead to meaningful and joyful math learning.

Dr. Lambert is an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Special Education at UC Santa Barbara and Assistant Director of the UCSB Mathematics Project. She will be joined by two practitioners featured in the book. You will see first-hand how these incredible teachers transformed their math spaces.

Come explore the lived experiences of disabled students, examine barriers in math, and delineate UDL Math Design Elements - engagement, representation, and strategic academic supports.

Includes
Continental breakfast and plated lunch (chicken or vegetarian pasta primavera) options available

Who Should Come?
Anyone interested in inclusive education, K-12 teachers, Administrators, District Leaders, TOSAs, and Math Coaches.
