Breakout Session: Where's the Math? Identifying the Mathematics in Children's Roleplaying

When young children roleplay, they naturally explore mathematical concepts like counting, noticing patterns, and comparing. Through these playful interactions, children develop foundational skills in mathematics, often without even realizing it. By observing and participating in their play, caregivers and educators can support and extend these mathematical explorations, fostering a positive and intuitive understanding of math from an early age.

Breakout Session: Where's the Math?: Exploring Mathematics through Literacy

Children's books are rich with opportunities to explore new settings, meet new characters, and learn new life lessons. Children's books also have opportunities to add and subtract as new characters are introduced, develop children's visual-spatial skills, and connect language to mathematics. When reading stories aloud (old favorites and new), caregivers and educators can create and extend mathematical explorations, foster connections between math and young children's everyday experiences, and build classroom libraries that develop and support a community of diverse young mathematicians.
