Full program description

Cultivating Collective Brilliance: Co-creating Identity-Affirming Healing-Informed Practices to Build Mathematical Agency of African-American Students

African-American students are brilliant in math! Math class should be a healing space where past math trauma is remedied by nurturing students’ mathematical identities and connectedness. In this session, Kari Kokka’s (2015) lens of C.A.R.M.A. (Culture, Agency, Relationships, Meaning, Achievement) will be explored. Participants will experience field-tested strategies of effective mathematics teaching practices with African-American students by co-creating identity-affirming learning environments, using rich open tasks, and building collective agency.
