Choosing to See the Mathematical Brilliance of Black Students

Do you want to unearth the mathematical brilliance of your Black students? Educators are invited to join our Choosing to See: A Framework for Equity in the Math Classroom, book study facilitated by Dr. Kyndall Brown (Co-author), where you’ll deepen equity-centered practices and collaboratively disrupt systemic barriers affecting Black students. Through rigorous, research-based discussions and actionable strategies, we will transform math classrooms into inclusive spaces that affirm and elevate Black learners.

Dr. Kyndall Brown is the Executive Director of The California Mathematics Project. Dr. Brown has 35+ years in math education, including 13 years teaching in LAUSD and 25 years leading professional learning.

Books will be mailed to the address provided during registration for Los Angeles County residents.

Sessions will support participants in:

Adapting cognitively demanding tasks to be culturally responsive and meaningful for students who see themselves in the work and are positioned as critical thinkers and problem-solvers.

K-12 Book Study Dates:

Six 75-minute book study sessions as follows:

· Session 1: September 17, 2025, Foreword, Preface, and Chapter 1

· Session 2:  October 8, 2025, Chapter 2

· Session 3: November 12, 2025, Chapter 3

· Session 4: December 3, 2025, Chapter 4

· Session 5: January 21, 2026, Chapter 5

· Session 6: February 11, 2026, Chapters 6, 7, and Conclusion
