Full program description
Newcomers in the Classroom: Designing Instruction for Language, Access, and Belonging - A Two-Day Institute
This two-day professional learning series supports educators in strengthening instructional practices for newcomer English Learners across grade levels and content areas. Participants will deepen their understanding of how language proficiency develops differently by age, grade, and context, recognize students’ multilingualism as a powerful learning asset, and explore the sociocultural and emotional factors that influence learning.
Through hands-on learning, educators will practice strategies for providing comprehensible input, prioritizing oral language, and integrating language, literacy, and content instruction. Emphasis is placed on designing classrooms that honor students’ identities, lower affective barriers, and ensure access to grade-level content while English proficiency grows. The series aligns with the California English Learner Roadmap Policy, offering a framework for equity-focused, research-informed instruction that fosters language development, academic success, and a sense of belonging for all newcomer students.
The workshop will be in person at LACOE on both days. Breakfast and lunch are not included. One hour will be provided for lunch on your own.
