Full program description
Ethnic Studies Three-Day Summit, Day 3
Day Three centers on intersectionality and civic engagement, two essential components of a transformative Ethnic Studies curriculum.
In the morning, Dr. Nadine Smith, a nationally recognized educator and advocate for equity in education, will lead a session on understanding and applying the concept of intersectionality in the classroom. Participants will explore how students’ overlapping identities, such as race, gender, class, and sexuality, shape their experiences, and how educators can create learning environments that are sensitive, inclusive, and affirming for all students.
In the afternoon, the UCI History Project will provide hands-on training on incorporating civic education into Ethnic Studies courses. Educators will learn how to design student-led civic engagement projects that connect historical understanding to real-world action, empowering students to become informed, active participants in their communities.
By the end of Day Three, participants will have gained strategies to support students’ identities while fostering critical thinking, dialogue, and civic responsibility.
