Full program description
Ethnic Studies Three-Day Summit, Day 2
Day Two of the institute focuses on the power of local history in Ethnic Studies instruction. The day emphasizes how grounding curriculum in community and place can deepen student engagement and cultural understanding.
In the morning, UCLA Center X will lead a session on integrating local history into Ethnic Studies courses. Educators will learn how to help students explore community counternarratives and examine how systemic oppression has appeared and been resisted within their own neighborhoods. This approach fosters deeper connections to history and a stronger sense of agency.
In the afternoon, representatives from the Gabrielino/Tongva Nation will share stories and perspectives rooted in the history of the Los Angeles region. Educators will learn how to respectfully and meaningfully incorporate Indigenous histories into their Ethnic Studies classrooms, centering Native voices and experiences.
By the end of Day Two, participants will be equipped with strategies and resources to localize their curriculum, strengthen community connections, and create more inclusive historical narratives.
