571 – California Common Core State Standards and the Standards for Mathematical Practice (K-12)
This is a 6-week online course
This course is an introduction to the Common Core State Standards, which are rigorous, research-based standards designed to prepare the students of California and the rest of the country with the knowledge and skills for college and the workforce. They are internationally benchmarked to ensure that students will be globally competitive. They form a clear and consistent educational framework that defines what students should understand and be able to do in their study of mathematics.
This course looks at the Common Core through the lens of the Standards for Mathematical Practice. The mathematics discussed include the use of number lines throughout the standards, a close look at Numbers and Operations in K-5, Expressions and Equations in Middle School, and Building Functions in High School. The course takes participants through an example of mathematical modeling and introduces them to the assessment consortium for the Common Core.
